Leadership in the SME world is very complex simply because business owners and leaders have to be expert in everything. In many cases owners started their business because of their technical skills and not their leadership skills. Most SME owners work full time in the business and not on the business and don’t spend enough time developing their own leadership skills.
The other critical factor is that you simply can’t know it all. There is always someone out there who has a lot more knowledge than you on a particular subject or an area where you are having difficulty.
Leaders must seek the right help at the right time! Asking for help is a leadership characteristic and not a weakness.
The issue of leadership and profitability are linked so to improve profitability you have to work on leadership. To address the very large subject of leadership you need to look at the characteristics of great business leaders and equally important, you need to look at the barriers, which I believe are the principle cause preventing leaders and businesses from reaching their full potential.
These barriers and strategies need to be identified and rectified early and addressed before leaders can significantly improve the profitability and performance of their business. From my observations, leaders face the following common barriers;
- Just don’t know or are not aware, unconscious incompetence
- Don’t know how
- Don’t have the skills, never been taught or shown
- Don’t want to change
- Work in the business, not on the business
- Negative beliefs
- Won’t get out of the comfort zone
- Lack of confidence
- Don’t ask for help.
